Abstract
412,822. Sluice gates. BUNTING, S. A. S., 133, Finchley Road, London. Oct. 28, 1933, No. 29994. [Class 68 (ii).] A water gate is controlled by two float-like " displacers," one of which opens the gate when the upstream rises; the other, when the downstream water, (e.g. tidal water), rises above a predetermined level, floats upwards, overcomes the first displacer, and closes the gate. Fig. 1 shows a radial-type gate 11, pivoted at 12 ; it has two cantilever beams 13, 14 extending laterally over chambers 15, 16 open at 17, 18 upstream and downstream respectively, and with non-return valved outlets 21, 23. Within these chambers are two displacers 19, 20 hanging from the cantilevers 13, 14, the displacer 20 being partly counterbalanced by the gate 11. When the rising downstream water enters the chamber 16 by the opening 18 it closes the gate 11, which opens only when the upstream water rises above the inlet 17 and the downstream water is below the inlet 18. In a modification, the parts 19, 20 are fitted upon a lever system connected to the valve 11, or to a gate pivoted at its lower edge, Fig. 5, (not shown), or upon a pulley system which may move a vertically-sliding gate 12 (Figs. 6 and 7 not shown). Fig. 3 shows a construction wherein a downstream float 55 is connected to and partly counterbalances a gate 51 pivoted at 52. Connected to the gate is a link system 58, 56, attached to which is the upstream float 54. This arrangement may be adapted for a reverse flow. In another form, Fig. 4, a single balance lever 65 and associated floats 67, 68 operate a valve 61 by means of toothed gearing 63, 64. Hydraulic, electric, and other mechanical devices may be used for transmitting the movements of the floats to the valves.
