Abstract
484,920. Plug cocks. SHAFFER, W. D., and SCHWEITZER, F. J. Nov. 11, 1936, No. 30819. [Class 135] To facilitate rotation under high pressure, a ported split closure ring is adapted to be engaged by an inner member integral with the actuating spindle so as to contract the ring and release it from the bore before rotating it. A casing 2 has ports 3, 4 and a bore 5 in which fits snugly a split ring 10 the split being along a line 13, and the ring has ports 11, 12. The ring is formed internally with helically inclined lugs 14, 15, Fig. 4, the lugs being on opposite sides of a line passing through the centre of port 11. The ring is rotated by a core 20, Fig. 3, having a bore 20a and spindle 22 and formed with recesses 26, 27 complementary to but wider than the lugs 14, 15 respectively. A shoulder 28 and a removable plate 31 moving with lost motion in recesses in the ring, prevent axial movement of the ring on the core. Normally the ring 10 fits the bore snugly, but upon rotation of the core, relative movement of the faces of the ring along the line 13 occurs, the ring being thereby slightly contracted and the pressure against the wall eased. Lubricant may be introduced to grooves 5a, Fig. 6, in the shell through valves 36 adapted for the attachment of a grease gun. British Specifications 15725/12, 338,913, [both in Class 135], and U.S.A.
