Abstract

516,614. Valves. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and PONTING, R. July 22, 1937, No. 20362. [Class 135] In a hydraulic-control valve wherein a cylindrical barrel is rotatable within a ported casing, the barrel is supported by anti-friction devices, e.g., ball bearings, and is of such size and shape as not to make contact with the casing over the cylindrical surface of the barrel. The valve body comprises lower and upper cover plates 10, 11 and an intermediate portion 12 which has pipe portions, such as 14, 16, each of which has a bore such as 18, 20. The parts of the body are held together by four bolts and nuts 22, packing being inserted at 23, 24. The lower cover plate 10 is solid, but the upper plate 11 has a diaphragm 25 bored to receive the spindle 26 which is packed by a ring 27 of resilient material, above which is a cup-leather 28 surmounted by a metal disc 30, the whole being held in place by a gland nut 31. The body portion 12 has a metal liner 32 which is ported and held against rotation and is engaged by rings 37, 39 within which are ball bearings 38, 40, the latter engaging a short extension 41. The stems 26, 41 are integral with a barrel 42 which, according to the invention, is machined to such a size as to leave a definite clearance all round between it and the sleeve. This clearance may have a radial dimension of 0.0005 inch or may be as great as 0.001 inch or even greater. The ball bearings take all lateral forces. The valve may be applied to the control of hydraulic jacks or motors used for actuating guns and gun-turrets on aircraft where great accuracy and rapidity and ease of movement are required. The ball bearings may be replaced by roller or other type, the liner 32 may be dispensed with and the stem 41 may extend downwardly through the lower cover plate 10.
