Abstract
484,219. Clocks. FERRANTI, Ltd., and BARNES, H. W. Nov. 9, 1936, No. 30432. [Class 139] A clock or like isochronous device comprises a synchronous electric motor 1 and a spring- driven motor 2 which operates continuously and drives the clock or like device when the electric motor fails. The synchronous motor 1 winds up the spring motor 2 through gears 23, 22, 21, and drives the ratchet wheel 10 through gears 4 to 9 and pawl 3. The spring motor drives the pawl 20 similarly through gears 17, 18, 19 at a slightly slower speed than pawl 3 so that ratchet 16, which with 10, is fixed to the shaft 11, is over-ridden by pawl 20, unless the synchronous motor fails. The drive to the clock is taken through gears 12, 13, 14, 15. The spring motor is controlled by an escapement (not shown) through gears 24, and drives an ancillary load through gears 26. This load may take the form of an air fan brake 25, as shown or be derived from the friction of a gear train. The object of this load is to make the load on the spring motor when running freely, comparable with the load when it is also driving the clock.
