459,907. Electric clocks. HORSTMANN GEAR CO., Ltd., and HORSTMANN, A., Newbridge Works, Bath, Somerset. Dec. 11, 1935, No. 34351. [Class 139] Timekeeping mechanism comprising in combination a synchronous electric motor 4, auxiliary clockwork mechanism of which the mainspring 6 is wound by motor 4 through a slipping arrangement to prevent overwinding, a time dial or equivalent (shaft 8) coupled to motor 4 and the auxiliary clockwork through a differential gear G, so as to be driven by motor 4 on the auxiliary according to which one is working, and an electromagnetic brake 12 which arrests the auxiliary clockwork except when the current to the motor 4 fails. The centre arbor 8, for driving the time dial (not shown), or other time-operated element, is driven by an epicyclic train G of which the planet carrier 13 is common to two sun wheels 14 and 15. Sun-wheel 14 is driven by the synchronous motor 4 through worm gear 18 and train 19 ... 24, of which wheel 24 is rigid with sun-wheel 14 and also drives a wheel 25 for winding the mainspring 6 of the auxiliary movement. Whilst the motor is running the circuit also energizes a solenoid 5 which pulls an armature lever with a slidable springy brake 12 against the scape wheel 11 to assist the latter. When the motor 4 ceases to act, the other sun-wheel 15 is driven by spring 6 through a train governed by the escapement 9. Spring 6 may also be wound manually by means of an arbor 31.
