Abstract

In processes involving the handling of molten magnesium e.g. in the pouring, casting, or moulding of magnesium or the production of magnesium alloys, there is employed as a flux a mixture of magnesium fluoride with a sulphide of one of the metals magnesium, calcium, and aluminium, the flux treatment being carried out in an atmosphere of a reducing gas, such as hydrogen or hydrocarbons, or of an inert gas, such as argon. Carbon, petroleum coke, graphite, carborundum, calcium carbide, or aluminium carbide may be added to the flux. Specification 465,421 is referred to.
