Abstract
284,722. Geyer, A. Feb. 4, 1927, [Convention date]. Alloys.-In the production of aluminium alloys, which may contain copper, manganese, silicon, magnesium, iron, carbon, tungsten, nickel, molybdenum, chromium, and cadmuim, oxidation of the molten bath is prevented by covering the bath with a layer of broken coal, and by introducing into the bath powdered coal which may be wetted. A layer consisting of carbides, metal salts, clay, &c., may also be used, and a reducing or inert atmosphere may be maintained by means of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, or other gases passed over or through the bath. By starting with a bath of aluminium, adding coal, and maintaining a reducing atmosphere, aluminium carbide may be obtained, and by adding other metals, aluminium carbide alloys may be made.
