Abstract

482,483. Stapling. PARROT SPEED FASTENER CORPORATION. April 17, 1937, No. 10979. Convention date, Jan. 2. [Class 89 (iii)] In a bench stapler, a cover member is hinged to the magazine so that it can be turned away therefrom to permit loading of, or access to staples in, the magazine. A base 11, which includes an adjustable anvil 19 adapted to be locked in either of two positions by a stud 29 on a leaf spring 30, is hinged at 43 to the body 12 of the stapler and normally is locked thereto by a latch 32 held by the spring 30. The staple magazine comprises a trough-like member 45 in which a rail 14 is held in fixed position by rivets 51, Fig. 7, and a tongue 61, so as to define a driver passage 69 between the front walls 46 and 67 of the trough and rail. A staple strip is slidably supported on the rail, as is a pusher 15 having flanged side walls interlocking with the sides of the rail. The trough also comprises a locking opening 40 for the latch 32 and ears 49 pivoting on the pivot pin 43. The body 12 is also pivoted on the pin 43 and comprises a rear part 16 and a sheath or front part 17 which are interconnected by a bayonet joint 79 and a pin 94. The part 17 constitutes a guide for the plunger 18, which carries a driver 96 operating in the passage 69. Normally, the body 12 is held, in a position enclosing the magazine, by a latch 131 slidable in slots 132 in the body and slots 135 in ears 48 on the trough 45. In this position, the lower edges of the sheath 17 are flush with the front edges 162 of the trough, while the lower edges of the part 16 are received within the side walls of the trough and overly the staples on the rail. The latch is held in locking position by the pusher spring 150. When the latch is moved forwardly, the body 12 may be swung away from the magazine, Fig. 3. The spring 150 then holds the pusher 15 at the rear of the magazine, permitting easy loading. When the body 12 is returned to closed position, cam surfaces of the ears 48 return the latch to locking position. A full-stroke mechanism comprises a bracket 84 secured in the sheath 17 and carrying slidably a latch member 100 which is urged forwardly by a spring 107. In the position of rest, the latch abuts the rear face of a lug 101 on the plunger 18. If the plunger makes a partial stroke, the latch moves forwardly above the lug, preventing a full return stroke of the plunger. If the latter makes a complete stroke, a cam surface 111 on it engages projections on the latch, moving the latter into a slot 103, so that it cannot obstruct the return stroke of the plunger. At the end of such stroke, however, shoulders on the plunger release the latch from the slot 103, permitting it to return to the rest position shown. The plunger is raised by a leaf spring 112 disconnectably associated with the plunger and the bracket 84.
