Abstract

1302449 Stapling machines S E TYSZKIEWICZ 10 June 1970 [10 June 1969 3 April 1970] 28170/70 Heading B4C A stapler comprises a beam 3, Fig. 1 a pusher 9, Fig. 2, which urges staples 7 along the beam by means of a spring 10, a magazine 15, Fig. 3, mounted pivotally on the beam by means of apertures 19 located on pivots 20, a slider 22, Fig. 4, which closes the lower end of the magazine to support and maintain alignment of the staples, and a cover 4 which is mounted pivotally on the beam and provided with a punch 8 for pushing a staple against an anvil 5, the arrangement being such that the slider can be slid manually to and from the position in which it closes the lower end of the magazine by use of a projecting arm 29 when the cover encloses the magazine at least partially. The magazine 15 accommodates several blocks of staples one above the other which are loaded one at a time on to the beam 3 when the slider 22 is drawn back by means of the arm 29, the pusher 9 then being released to push the lowermost block forwardly. The pusher is provided with a knob 13 which may be coupled to the slider arm 29 so that the slider and pusher move together. The magazine is provided with a projection 21 which engages in a notch in the slider and a pair of ears 17 which press on the lowermost block of staples to hold them in alignment; if desired, the ears 18 for the pivot may be slotted or replaced by hook-members. The slider 22 consists of a forwardly-projecting arm 28 to which the arm 29 is attached and a rear arm which engages the ears 18 on the magazine and is supported by a member 27 on a member 23 which is centred on a plate 24 and provided with a nose 25 adapted to enter a hole 26 in the magazine. A staple opening tool may be bolted to the base 1 which may be swung back to allow staples to be punched directly into material such as wood. In a modification, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown), the slider includes a spring-loaded plunger (37) for urging the member 23 into engagement. In another modification, Fig. 12 (not shown), the beam (3) is hinged to the base (1) as before but the cover (4) is hinged to the beam half way along its length. In a further modification, Fig. 13 (not shown), the cover is recessed to receive the slider arm (29) when the slider is positioned correctly below the magazine; to operate the arm (29), the cover is first lifted to a position in which the arm is just clear of the recess. For industrial use several staplers may be employed, the sliders and pushers being withdrawable together by means of a solenoid.
