One object of the presenfinvention is to provide a new and improved staplingdevi'ce in which the spring urged staple pushing means isactuated together'with the opening and closing motions' of the staple magazine in one single operation, thus avoiding the special manipulation :of thestaple pusher and preventing'an uncontrolled recoiling. motion of the -spring. A further object of my invention-is to" provide a stapling device in which the front portion of a movable cover 'plate projects'intda staple receiving recess of a staple supporting arm to form with the front wall of the recess a staple drive way permitting removal of brokenstaples by relative movement between the cover plate and the staple supporting arm. A still further object of my invention is to provide a wire stapling=device in which "the coverplate and the staple supporting arm=are slidable relative to eachother for exposing the staple receiving recess.
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent as the specification proceeds, my invention will be best understood by reference to the following specification and claims and the illustrations inthe accompanying drawings, in which: 1

Referring now more specifically to the drawings, there is shown in the Figs. 1 to 5 a base plate -1 of the new and improved stapling or wire stitching device, said base plate being provided witha staplingclinching anvil 2 havingshaped grooves-(Fig. 4). In the staple supporting arm 4 of the device there is provided a staple magazine 5 consisting of a suitably long recess of rectangular cross section corresponding to the size of wire staples,.said recess being adapted to slidably housethe-staple strip. In the supporting arm 4 there is provided a bent spring 6 to the top of which is secured a staple driving member 7 guided adjacent to a front wall 8 in. a staple drive way 10 and adapted to be pressed-down by a lever 12 having .ears 12 pivoted on a pivot pin 11,;thus enabling a sheari g and driving of wire staples 9. Thespring 6 elevates the staple driving member 7 upwards and spring 13 lifts the staple supporting arm 4-;after every stapling operation from the base plate into the position shown in Fig. l. When a new staple strip has to be inserted into the recess 5; the supporting arm 4 is pivoted to the angularly spaced position of Fig. 2. When the member 4 moves to the position shown in Fig. 2, the cover plate 15 stops in the illustrated position since themember 13 permits only limited pivotal movement of the cover plate 15. A pin 18 is carried on the cover plate by two abutments 19 and pushing means 16 are withdrawn. A cylindrical coil spring 22 surrounds the leaf spring 17, and bears against the pins 18' and 21"for urging the staple pusher means 16 forwardly in the direction'of the arrow.
For insertion of a new staple stripinto the recess 5 in front of staple pusher 16, the, supporting arm 4 ispivoted beyond the position shown in Fig. 2 so that the hooked end 20 of the leaf spring 17 engages the pin' 21, and the leaf spring 17 assumes a substantially straight position whereupon the staple pushing means 16-are held by'the hooked end'20. The new staple "strip is inserted, and
'when the arm '4 is moved backto the position shown in Fig. l, the hooked end 20 of the leaf spring :17 slides along the newly inserted staple strip, while the coil spring 22 is compressed between-the pins 18 and 21 since movement of the staple pusher 16 isblocked by the staple strip. .The leaf spring17 assumes the-position shown in Fig. l

When the staple' magazine S has become empty the staple pusher 16 has moved. so fart forward that the pin 21 is engaged by the hook-shaped link 20 of the small leaf spring 17 and the staples pusher 16 is drawn back when the supporting arm is opened. Since the. end of the-cylindrical coil compression spring. 22 is moved back-at the-same time it is not necessary toweffect the backward'motion ofthe staplenpushing means 16 against the action of a springi'n contrast to well known embodiments of the art. guided by guide gibs 29, 30 (Fig. 9) laterally bent upright and inwards engaging with lateral grooves 31 recessed into the supporting arm 411, thus assuring guidance of the cover plate 28 when displaced. If said cover plate is moved to an inoperative position in the direction of arrow 32 the front portion of the cover plate, namely, the lug 33, which is located in the recess a, engages the staple pusher 16a thereby moving it rearwards against the action of the spring 22' so as to make the magazine :space at the same time accessible for inserting a new staple strip therein. For this purpose the stapling device is preferably turned so that the magazine space opened at its bottom side is facing upwards enabling the wire .staple strip to be inserted sliding on its back face.
When the cover plate 28 then is moved back into the position shown in Fig. 6 the staple magazine is closed. The wire staple strip 14a is securely held and the foremost wire staple is separated at the upper edge of the projecting lug 33 by every stroke of the lever 12a, said lug simultaneously forming the rear wall of the staple drive way a. By displacing the bottom plate 28 together with its lug 33, the two parts of the staple drive way 10 :are separated, thus insuring that a broken wire staple can be removed extremely easily. The bottom plate 28 is secured by a snap lock in its operating position wherein the staple magazine 5a is kept closed as well as in the loading position as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, respectively. For this purpose, a spring catch 34 pressing against the bottom part of the staple supporting arm may be employed and is provided with projections or beads 35 snapping in suitable grooves or recesses 36 and 37, respectively, recessed into the upper part at the two positions to be fixed therewith utilizing the action of the spring 34. In both embodiments of the invention, the staple supporting arm and the cover plate constitute a stapling unit which is pivotally mounted on the base plate.
In the embodiments of the stapling devices shown in Figs. 1 to 9 the base plate carries the stapling anvil 2, 2a respectively. Said stapling anvil 2 is constituted by a cylindrical roller body rotatably supported in a transversal bore 38, which is opened over its length at the top side, said roller body being adjustable into the desired angular position by means of a sideways projecting handle 39 as shown in Fig. 5. At the circumference of the anvil roller 2 there are axially recessed the shaped grooves 3 in which the legs of the wire staples are bent.
The manner of using and applying the illustrative embodiment of my invention set forth above will be clear from the foregoing description. It is, of course, to be understood that my invention is not limited to the specific embodiment thereof here shown and described for purposes of illustration only. Various changes, modifications, and supplemental arrangements may be made in the stapling device set forth and in the structural details shown, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What I claim is: p
1. In a stapling machine, comprising a base; a staple supporting arm having a face located opposite said base and formed with a recess open on said face for receiving a strip of staples; a staple pusher slidably mounted in said recess; a cover for said staple supporting arm arranged intermediate said base and said staple supporting arm and adapted to cover said recess; means pivoting said arm and said cover for relative movement to and from each other to expose said face and said recess in said staple supporting arm; and a hooked member swingably attached to said cover and engageable with said staple pusher for movement in one direction by the relative movement between said cover and said staple supporting arm away from each other to expose said face of said staple supporting arm, and to disengage said staple pusher upon relative movement of said cover and said staple supporting arm towards each other to cover said face of said staple supporting arm.
2. In a stapling machine, comprising a base; a staple supporting arm having a face located opposite said base and formed with a recess open on said face for receiving a strip of staples; a staple pusher slidably mounted in said recess; a cover for said staple supporting arm arranged intermediate said base and staid staple supporting arm and adapted to cover said recess; a coil spring abutting on one end thereof against said cover and on the other end thereof against said staple pusher; means pivoting said arm and said cover for relative movement to and from each other to expose said face and said recess in said staple supporting arm; and a hooked member located within said coil spring swingably' attached to said cover and engageable with said staple pusher for movement in one direction by the relative movement between said cover and said staple supporting arm away from each other to expose said face of said staple supporting arm, and to disengage said staple pusher upon relative movement of said cover and said staple supporting arm towards each other to cover said face of said staple supporting arm.
3. In a stapling machine, in combination, a base; and a stapling unit pivoted to said base, said stapling unit including a staple supporting arm member having a bottom face located above said base and formed with an elongated recess open on said bottom face for receiving a strip of staples, a means at one end of said staple supporting arm member having a face extending normal to said bottom face and constituting one end wall of said recess, spring urged staple pushing means located in said recess for urging a strip of staples toward said end wall of said elongated recess, a cover plate member for covering said bottom face, means for mounting one of said members for movement relative to the other of said members between a normal position in which said recess in said bottom face is covered by said cover plate member and a loading position exposing said recess for a loading operation, and a front portion on said cover plate member located in said normal position of said cover plate member in said elongated recess adjacent to said end Wall spaced for such a distance as to define with the same a staple driveway in said recess permitting passing of a single staple, said front portion being spaced a greater distance from said end wall in said loading position so that a staple obstructing said staple driveway may be easily removed.
4. In a stapling machine, in combination, a base; a stapling unit including a staple supporting arm having a bottom face located above said base and formed with an elongated recess open on said bottom face for slidably housing a strip of staples, means at one end of said staple supporting arm having a face extending normal to said bottom face and constituting one end wall of said recess, spring urged staple pushing means located in said recess for urging a strip of staples toward said end wall of said elongated recess, and a cover plate for covering said recess in said bottom face; pivot means supporting said stapling unit on said base and also supporting said cover plate for relative movement to and from each other to expose in a loading position said recess for a loading operation; a front portion on said cover plate located in saidelongated recess adjacent to said end wall spaced for such a distance as to define with the same a staple driveway in said recess, said front portion being spaced a greater distance from said end wall in said loading position of said cover plate so that a staple obstructing said staple driveway may be easily removed.
5. In a stapling machine, in combination, a base; a staple supporting arm having a bottom face located above said base and formed with an elongated recess open on said bottom face for slidably receiving a strip of staples, means at one end of said staple supporting arm having a face extending normal to said bottom face and constituting one end wall of said recess; pivot means pivotally supporting said staple supporting arm on said base movable between a first position in which said bottom face thereof is located close to said base and a second position in which said bottom face is angularly spaced from said base; spring urged staple pushing means located in said recess for urging a strip of staples toward said end wall of said elongated recess; a cover plate for covering said recess in said bottom face; means supporting said cover plate on said staple supporting arm slidable on said bottom face between a normal position in which said recess is covered by said cover plate and a loading position exposing said recess for a loading operation; said cover plate, said supporting arm and said staple pushing means constituting a stapling unit which is pivotally supported on said base by said pivot means; and the front portion on said cover plate when located in said normal position of said cover plate in said elongated recess close to said end wall and defining with the same a staple driveway in said recess, said front portion being spaced a greater distance from said end wall in said loading position of said cover plate so that a staple obstructing said staple driveway may be easily removed.
6. A stapling device as claimed in claim 5, and ineluding a resilient catch means releasably locking said cover plate in said normal position and in said loading position to said staple supporting arm.
7.
