Abstract
Textile or other articles to be laundered, dry-cleaned, dyed or similarly treated are marked by applying an ink containing an organic solvent to a local area of the article, which area has been made different from the remaining area by the application thereto of a water-insoluble material capable of penetration or swelling by the organic solvent. Such water-insoluble material may be, for example, a cellulose ester or ether or a synthetic resin and the use of cellulose acetate or acetobutyrate is specified. A film of such material may be produced in the area by chemical means or may be applied as a solution or suspension thereof which is then evaporated, or by cold or hot pressing in presence of a solvent for the film material or the fabric, or, e.g. in the case of a thermoplastic material or of a material dissolved in a fusible solvent, may be applied by hot ironing; alternatively, a tape impregnated or coated with the material may be attached to the article by sewing or by metal staples. In an example, a label, obtained by cutting up a compound fabric made by moistening a cotton fabric with a solution of cellulose acetobutyrate in acetone and applying a thin film of cellulose acetobutyrate thereto by hot ironing, is attached to the article and is marked with an ink consisting of a suspension of ultramarine in an acetone solution of cellulose acetate.
