Abstract

Fibrous materials, such as textiles, paper or leather, or films, are coloured by depositing thereon in a high vacuum the vapours of dyestuffs which vaporize or sublime without decomposition. Improved effects may be obtained by pretreating the surface of the fibrous material with an adhesively acting substance such as a thermoplastic synthetic resin. The fastness to rubbing of the colorations may be improved by subsequently applying a synthetic resin or varnish. Patterned effects may be obtained by employing stencils. In the case of fabrics, leather or paper, both surfaces may be coloured by the same or different dyestuffs. An example describes the colouring of a polyamide fabric.
