Abstract

Foils or sheets of synthetic plastic materials are coloured by applying a thin layer of colouring means in solid form or in the form of a paste to the surface of the sheet and then heating at 100 DEG -200 DEG C. in a cylinder drying machine or in an infrared drier, the temperature being chosen so that it is below the softening or decomposition point of the plastic and below the volatilization or decomposition point of the colouring means. When the paste contains small quantities of volatile solvents or dispersing means which boil at temperatures below 100 DEG C., the latter are removed by evaporation before the sheets are subjected to the heat treatment at 100 DEG -200 DEG C., and any other solvents or dispersing agents present in the paste must not be volatile at the temperature at which the heat treatment is applied. The process is particularly applicable to sheets or foils of polyesters, butadiene-styrene copolymers, polyethylene and polypropylene, and also to glass fibre reinforced resin sheets. Dyestuffs or pigments may be applied in pulverised condition, or sublimable dyestuffs may be vaporized and condensed in vacuo on to the surface of the sheets. Alternatively, the dyestuff layer may be applied from a carrier, or by roller or block printing, and the process is applicable to local coloration in two or more colours.
