480,478. Regulating air-flow. ETABLISSEMENTS LIORE ET OLIVIER. Jan. 6, 1937, Nos. 414 and 415. Convention dates, Jan. 6, 1936 and Nov. 14, 1936. [Class 4] In an arrangement of movable vanes for use in regulating airflow through a slot or orifice and for controlling the temperature of a space connected to the slot, the vanes pivot about an axis disposed upon a fixed element and each vane is moved by a side of a flexible chamber 8 abutting part of the vane and located in a frame permitting movement of the side, the volume of the chamberbeing remotely controlled by means of a compressed gas or a liquid. As shown, vanes 1 are pivotally mounted on the trailing edge of an aero-engine cowling 16 and are operated against the action of springs 4 which may tend to open or close the vanes. A heatinsulating sheet 6 may protect the chamber. Continuity of the surface of the cowling, as the vanes open, is maintained by intermediate vanes of leather. The walls of the chambers may be extensible or inextensible and screens may be employed to protect the chambers.
