480,161. Rolling - mills. HERAEUS VACUUMSCHMELZE AKT.-GES. Sept. 6, 1937, Nos. 24340 and 24341. Convention dates, Oct. 5, 1936 and Nov. 6, 1936. [Class 83 (iv)] In a mill with small rolls A backed by groups of support rollers C, D where coolant from the usual perforated pipes and felts L cannot reach enclosed spaces such as c and f, these spaces are cooled by fluid pumped in by a short pipe E at each end of the spaces, so that it flows partly through and back to the respective end from which it came through a longer pipe F or vice versa. The pipe F is provided with slots H to distribute the coolant as it flows back, the slots being partially masked to the extent desired, e.g. by a concentric rotatable per, forated sleeve, or another arrangement of slots may be masked by a sleeve which can be adjusted axially. The adjustment of the coolant flow may be made to give the desired degree of convexity to the rolls. The supply pressure may be different for different spaces, those near the rolls having a higher pressure.
