The invention relatesto fluid cooled rolls for use in glass rolling apparatus. The in- Vention has for its principa-l objects the pro- Vision of an improved roll in which the tendency of the roll to Warp under the severe heat conditions encountered in forming glass sheets in an intermittent rolling operation is reduced to a minimum. Certain embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an assembly View in Vertical cross section taken on the line I-I of Fig. 2 showing the roll in position of service. Fig. 2 is a partial front elevation and partial section on the line II-I of Fig. 1. Figs. 3`
and 4 are enlarged detail Sections through the roll, Fig. 8 being a section on the line III-III of Fig. 4, and Fig. 4 being a section on the line IV-IV of Fig. 3. Figs, 6 and 7 illustrate a modification, Figs. 5 and 6 being Sections, and Fig. 7 being a partial plan view. Figs. 8 and 9 are sections illustrating another modification. And Figs. 10 and 11 are sections illustrating still another modification.
Figure 1 illustrates the application of the roll to an intermittent rolling apparatus, the glass sheet 1 being formed between the rolls 2 and 3, the latter of which being the structure to which the present invention is directed. The rolls are suitably driven, the roll 2 being supported upon the driven rolls 4 and 5. The body of glass 6 which forms the sheet is teemed into a pocket between the two rolls. One of the difiiculties encountered in a rolling'operation of this kind is that of maintaining the roll 3 at a proper temperatureto prevent warping due to the fact that the application of a large body of molten glass on one side of the roll tends to distort it. As a result, the roll bows to a certain extent and the glass sheet which is formed is of uneven thickness. Due to this fact, the sheet must be cast somewhat thicker than would otherwise be the case and more grindent invention is designed to overcome this difiiculty and to reduce any bowing or warping to a minimum.
The roll 3 preferably consists of a series lthe parts to be joined With copper prelimine ary to brlnging them to a temperature nec'es-` ing is required to bring the twoV faces of the sheets to parallelism throughout. The pres-.
of annular discs 7 brazed together at their side faces so as to form arcylinder through which a circulation of Water isprovidedby means of the swivels 8, 8 connecte'rlto suitable water supply pipes 9. The 'brazing is preferably done by the use of copper as' 'a bra'zing material in a hydrogen `furnace, the copper being supplied in the form of .thin diss 'between the parts to be join'e'd', or by plating sary for brazing in a hydro'genfurnace; The discs are each preferably reduced in thickness at their 'outer edges, as indicat'ed Fig.,3 so that a series of circumfere'ntial'slots '10 `'are provided. These slots are preferably of such small Awidth that the molte'n glass will hot flow into andfill them during the rolling' 'op'- eration. This width 'may Vary :somewhat but is preferabl'y about one one-hundredthsof an inch. By this expedient,l 'any warping-'due to the roll being overheated on one sid'eisreduced to a minimum since eaehdisc can expand longitudinally of the roll without aifecting the other discs. In orderrto still-further v- 'overcome any tendencyrto Warp,V the surface' of the roll isprovi'oled withV the series -of ligitudinal slots 11 (Fig. 4). lThe 'surface of the roll is thusl divided into a pluralit of rectangles and each rectan'glar section a's thus ;provided is free to `Vepand without i affecting any other section.v These longiturdinal slots 'are also preferably about one'onhundredths of an inch in width. "They eX- tend inwardfrom the surface of theroll to about the same depth as 7+the slots 105. as indi'- cate'd in Fi'gs'. 3 and .'4. x: Figs. 51, 6,- and 7 illustrate` a mo'dififc'ation in which the rolling face of the' roll is made up of a plurality of pins or pegs llsquare in cross section 'an'dprovided withreduced ends 13 whichfit into socket's 14 inthe cylinder 15. The pinsV are arranged so that their side walls are spaced away from each V.(Jtln'er;.thu's providing the circuniferential groovesf161and longitudinalgrooves '17 corresponding tothe grooves 10'and11 of the construction of Figs. 1 to 4. The ends 13.of the may0 ble I shrunk in the sockets 14 or maybe pressed i F such sockets. i w
Figs. 8 and 9 illustrate another modification in which the roll is an integral structure. This roll, as in the other forms of constru^- tion is provided with two sets of slots 18 and 19, such slots being formed by saws or 4;. and ,these rings'are also provided with longit'udinal slots 23' corresponding to the vslots-.11 in the construction of Figs. 1 to ll.
