Abstract

479,981. Cooling brake drums. FITZPATRICK, W. G., and WEBSTER S. W. March 19, 1937, No. 8168. [Class 103 (i)] Means for cooling a brake rim comprises a supply pipe 25 with a head 26 adapted to spray water on to the rim 11 of the brake drum which is formed as an annular trough and a pipe 30 for withdrawing the water. The arrangement is such that the water 'does not over flow from the drun either when it is rotat ing or is stopped, a layer of water of a depth deter mined by the distance o the end 31 of the pipe 30 from the drum being formed by centrifugal force when the drum is rotating. The head 26 is arranged to spray the water on both sides of the vertical diameter of the rim so that the water flows over the whole of the rim when it is stationary. The suction device for the pipe 30 comprises an ejector 32 to which actuating fluid is supplied by pipe 34 having a control valve 35. The plate 15 which is secured to the drum to form the trough may be dished as shown, to accommodate relative expansion of the plate with respect to the drum.
