Abstract

479,756. Thermal switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., HEWLETT, S. J., and STOPFORD, C. W. Aug. 7, 1936, No. 21820. [Class 38 (v)] A thermally-released switch for an electric kettle or other appliance comprises a contactcarrying plunger 25 adapted to be manually depressed against the action of a spring 28 to bring a contact 30 into bridging engagement with two contacts 31, the plunger being latched in this position by one or more bimetal strips 11 having fingers 13 engaging a V-shaped groove 36 in the plunger, the other ends of the strips 11 being embedded in a massive block 2 in good heat conducting relationship with the heating element 1. When a certain "safe" temperature is exceeded, the strips 11 move apart to release the plunger and break the circuit. The plunger 25 has a sleeve portion 24 with a slot 26 in which rides a fixed pin 27. The body 2 is thermally insulated by washers 4, 5 from the switch housing.
