Abstract
478,628. Washing granular materials. WINDSOR, G. P. July 21, 1936, No. 20265/37. Divided out of 478,516. [Class 82 (ii)] In a jig-washer in which the water pulsations are produced by the admission and exhaust of compressed air or gas, part of the screen is overhung by a trough, e.g. either the feed trough or the outlet trough, refuse is discharged from the end of the overhung portion, and a separate water compartment is provided located entirely beneath the overhung portion so that the pulsations in this compartment do not assist in the separation but serve only to assist in the discharge of the separated refuse. The arrangement may be provided at both ends of the screen, i.e. below both the feed and the outlet trough. Fig. 1 shows a jig-washer with a screen 13 overhung at one end by a trough 20 from the end of which depends an adjustable refuse discharge gate 26. A weir 27 which may also be adjustable is preferably provided at the end of the screen. The washer below the screen is divided into compartments by partitions 17, 18 and a compartment 19 located wholly below the overhung part of the screen is formed by the partitions 18 and 21. The supply of air to the air chamber connected with this compartment is preferably controlled separately from the supply to the other air chambers and may be controlled by a float 24 which rests on the refuse bed and opens and closes a valve 25 in the air supply so that pulsations are produced in the compartment 19 only when the refuse level rises. The method of refuse discharge may be used in the washer described in Specification 478,516. Specification 476,379, [Group XXIX], also is referred to.
