Abstract
Blue pigments are prepared by treating a manganese green produced by heating a mixture comprising a manganese compound, a substratum consisting of or containing barium sulphate, and barium nitrate, with an acid in the presence of a reducing agent. If, in the production of the manganese green, the mixture of originating materials is heated for a period insufficient to convert into oxide all the nitrite formed from the barium nitrate, the presence of this nitrite is sufficient to exert an adequate reducing action during the acid treatment. Specified reducing agents are sodium and barium nitrites, hydrogen peroxide, barium peroxide, perborates, sulphur dioxide, sulphites and stannous chloride. The frit of manganese green may be suspended in water before treatment with acid and reducing agent. Specification 1729/64, [Class 95], is referred to.
