Abstract
To moderate the hardening effect of a liquid used for quenching the surface of a heated iron alloy article, air or another gas, such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide, is introduced into the quenching liquid in the form of finely distributed bubbles. The air or other gas may be enclosed in the foam produced by adding a foam-former, such as soap, saponin or glycerine, to the quenching p liquid and may be introduced into the liquid or the soap or solution by means of a water-jet pump. Instead of water chlorinated hydrocarbons such as carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene may be used as the quenching liquid.
