Abstract

Pulp or the like of low density is bleached by incorporating with it a bleaching agent and permitting the mixture to flow by gravity in a shallow unagitated column along a downwardly-inclined conduit of relatively great length. The bleaching may be carried out in two or more stages with washing between the stages, and the bleaching at low density may be combined with a bleaching at high density. A temperature-controlling medium may be introduced into the pulp at one or more stages. Specification 264,596, [Class 15 (i), Dyeing &c., Apparatus for], is referred to.
