Abstract

475,560. Mine-props. GERLACH, K. May 19, 1936, No. 14203. [Class 20 (ii)] A mine-prop comprises an inner tapered member sliding in an outer member with a pocket, a wedge or wedges between the members, and a locking member, the wedge and locking member being arranged in the pocket so that the locking member is not subjected to the whole of the lateral thrust set up by the axial load on the prop and for collapse is moved in a different direction from that in which the movable parts yield under load. As shown on the right-hand side of Fig. 1, the upper member 1 is provided with ribs 14 against which bear wedges 9 which move with the member 1 ; coacting with these wedges are loose wedges 4, 10, the wedge 4 having two inclined surfaces, one coacting with a wedge spacer 6 and the other with a wedge locking member 5 all disposed in a pocket 3 on the lower prop member 2; by this arrangement part of the thrust of the inner prop member under load is transmitted through the spacer-block 6 to the pocket and part to the locking member 5 which is adapted to be raised when the prop is to be released. Alternatively, a separate locking member 5<1> adapted to be withdrawn transversely for collapse, is used to support the wedge spacer-block 6. On the left of Fig. 1 are shown two alternative arrangements wherein the wedge 10 is supported either by a locking member 5<11> arranged between the upper end of the lower prop member and a lip on the wedge, or by a locking member 5<111> disposed between a projection 16 on the wedge and a projection on the side of the pocket 3. In other forms, the wedge is retained in position by a transverse locking key disposed between opposed lips on the wedge and pocket, or between a lip on the wedge and an auxiliary wedge spacer-block, and the key may be of wedge formation to coact with opposed wedge surfaces on either the locking wedges or on spacer-blocks. For resilience, as shown in Fig. 9, the transverse locking member 5 is spring-pressed against double inclined surfaces 6a on spacer-blocks 6, which have wedge contact with the mainwedge 4. The main-wedge 4 may be formed in two resiliently connected portions according to a further modification. The locking member may also be formed in two resiliently connected parts for use with any of the forms of prop described in the Specification.
