449,967. Mine roof supports. STEWARTS & LLOYDS, Ltd., 41, Oswald Street, Glasgow. Feb. 21, 1935, No. 5545. Convention date, Aug. 29, 1934. [Class 20 (ii)] A mine-prop or roof-support comprises telescopic tubular metal members, the outer member being provided with internal projections which contact with the end of the internal member and offer resistance to its movement under load. The end of the inner tubular member 21 is inturned and normally rests on projections 27 carried by a clamping ring 24 which encircles the outer prop-member 22, the projections passing through holes in the wall of the outer prop-member. Relative longitudinal movement between the propmembers under load results in grooves being formed in the inner member by the projections. Alternatively, the projections may be directly fixed in the wall of the outer member and more than one set of projections may be provided. For mine roofs a cambered bar 20 supports bearers E and is fixed at each end to the recessed end 25 of an inner propmember, further bearers being interposed between the props and the walls of the tunnels ; the props give when the load on the cambered bar exceeds a predetermined amount.
