Abstract

443,694. Wedges. HEWITT, T. H., Hill Side, Tunnel Road, Ansley, Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Sept. 24,1935, No. 26388. [Class 89 (ii)] [See also Group X] A wedge-block or chock, particularly adaptable for supporting the material above a coal cut and for use with a mine-roof prop 18, comprises upper and lower wedge-members 1, 2, having overlapping oppositely-directed checks 5 on each side, and an intermediate wedge-member 4. The three members are interconnected by a pin or bolt 10, the arrangement being such that the upper and lower members have relative freedom of movement in a vertical direction while the member 4 is free to slide horizontally. To provide for such movements, the checks 5 and the wedgemember 4 are formed respectively with vertical slots 9 and a horizontal slot 8, through which slots the bolt 10 passes. The parts are locked in the adjusted position by nuts 11. The upper surface of the member 1 may be provided with serrations 14 or the like for gripping purposes, and with an end rib 15 by which the device may be correctly positioned. The upper and lower faces c of the inner wedge-member are joined by three vertical webs 7 as shown in Fig. 2.
