Abstract
475,380. Mine-roof supports. WOOD, H. N., WOOD & CO., Ltd., H., and MOLL, W. Nov. 16, 1936, No. 31326. [Class 20 (ii)] Arched metal supports for roof mines of the type having concave shoes at their ends for abutment against segmental or curved resilient packing, have the ends of the support cut obliquely to the axis of the support whereby a relatively greater downward pressure than side pressure is transmitted than is the case in a support where the ends are cut normal to the axis. In one form as shown in Fig. 1, an I-section support 1 is provided with an oblique end and a concave metal shoe formed of angle bars 6, 6a pivoted to the end of the support and having downturned edges to bite into the support 3. The upwardly extending flanges of the shoe members may be cut away to receive the ends of the support. In another form, the shoe is formed of T-section metal with the web engaging between the webs of channel-section members arranged back to back to constitute the arched support. In still another form as shown in Fig. 7, the shoe 8 is formed of bent metal with upturned portions to engage the flanges of the support 1 or the ends of the support may be cut and bent to form an integral concave shoe; alternatively, separate angle portions, each with one flange curved, may be secured to the flanges of the support member.
