Abstract
475,321. Gyroscopic apparatus. ALKAN, R. March 22, 1937, No. 8359. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1936. [Class 97 (iii)] In a directional gyroscope a part of a single air jet for driving the rotor 9 impinges on a deflector element 10 integral with the rotor carrying frame 7 and provides a torque to correct deviation of the rotor axis from the horizontal. As shown, the air jet nozzle 6 is in one piece with a hollow trunnion 4 of the vertical ring 5 and is supplied with air by the stationary injection pipe 1. The deflector element 10 is fixed near a horizontal trunnion of the frame 7 and is shaped so as to give a large correcting torque about the vertical axis and a negligible disturbing torque about the horizontal axis. A differential gear 13 is interposed between the trunnion 11 of the vertical ring 5 and the element controlled thereby, e.g. a pointer or automatic steering apparatus for aircraft, so that corrections and alterations of course may be introduced without modifying the position of the rotor axis.
