Abstract
579,991. Gyroscopic apparatus. JACK & HEINTZ, Inc. Dec. 7, 1943, No. 20464. Convention date, July 28, 1942. [Class 97 (iii)] An oil-spun and pressure-lubricated directional gyro comprises a suspension member 9 carried by a rotatable vertical shaft 5, a universal joint 11, 12, 13 carried by the suspension member, depending arms 20 mounted on the universal joint, a gimbal ring 55 pivotally carried by the arms and thus having two degrees of freedom with respect to the suspension member, a pair of directional gyro rotors 18, 19 mounted in the gimbal ring for spinning about a single horizontal axis, and rotorspinning nozzles 40, 41 adjacent the rotors, the arrangement being such that, upon tilting of the rotor assembly in, either direction one rotor moves into closer proximity to its driving nozzle than the other, whereupon the increased pressure of the jet issuing from the nozzle restores the rotors to central position. The rotors are driven by pressure oil which enters by a pipe 33 and after passing through the various bearings issues through the nozzles 40, 41. The shaft 5 carries a pointer 3 indicating against an adjustable compass card 2.
