Abstract
661,871. Grinding lenses. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY. March 10, 1948 [March 21, 1947], No. 7400/48. Addition to 652,252. Class 60. The apparatus of the parent Specification has one of the tools 2 arranged with its axis of rotation 0<SP>1</SP>-0<SP>2</SP> in a fixed position and has the guiding means 50 for the blank 1 mounted so that its axis X-Y may be adjusted in relation to the axis 0<SP>1</SP>-0<SP>2</SP>, the guiding means being operatively connected to the grinding tool so that it will be rotated therewith about the axis 0<SP>1</SP>-0<SP>2</SP>. The tool 3 is mounted on a bracket 14 which can be adjusted about a horizontal axis 0<SP>1</SP> and locked by screws 20, 21. The centre of curvature of the tool 3 is at 0<SP>3</SP> and that of the tool 2 at 0<SP>2</SP>, the axis 0<SP>1</SP> being situated at the intersection of the axes 0<SP>1</SP>-0<SP>2</SP> and 0<SP>1</SP>-0<SP>3</SP>. The guiding means, the axis of which is at X-Y, is connected with a part 45 which, together with a part 48, houses a spherical enlargement 42 on the shaft of the tool 2. A pin and slot connection between the parts 45 and 42 allows relative angular movement while maintaining the drive from the shaft to the part 45. The latter is rotated in a ballbearing 52 the outer race of which is secured to a bracket which can swivel about the point 0<SP>2</SP> and be locked in position by bolts 55. A bowl 58 secured to the part 45 is supplied with a quantity of abrasive-containing liquid so that, as the bowl rotates, the liquid will flow through stationary pipes 63, 64 to be directed on to the faces of the work. A watertight sleeve 60 seals the bowl. In a second embodiment this sleeve and the pin and slot connection are replaced by an elastic member bonded to the parts 42 and 45. A needle bearing may be substituted for the roller bearing. The blank may be positioned and removed by a suction system.
