Abstract
784,693. Gyroscopic apparatvs. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. June 18 1951 [April 24, 1950], No. 10094/50. Class 97(3) [Also in Group XXXIV] A gyroscope rotor mounted on a spherical air bearing has its rotational axis maintained fixed in space by electromagnetic torque devices mounted on the rotor and casing; the energization of the torque devices is controlled by electrical or optical error signals. As shown, the rotor 12 is mounted on the spherical air bearing 17 which together with the casing 21 rotates in the bearings 20. Deflection of the rotation axis of 12 is detected by photo-electrical means (not shown) from mirror 26 through window 25 and the resultant error signals energize the coils 30 which react with magnet 29 to re-align the axes of the rotor and casing. In a further embodiment, not shown, the misalignment between the rotor and casing is detected by electromagnetic pick-offs.
