Abstract

147,062. Anschutz & Co. June 7, 1918, [Convention date]. Gyroscopic apparatus for indicating the vertical or the horizontal, or for use as a stabilizer, in which the parts of the apparatus which participate in the angular movements of the axis of the gyroscope are continuously rotated about the said axis or an axis parallel thereto at a speed considerably greater than the processional velocity of the gyroscopes, is provided with an indicator such as a mirror carried by the rotated parts. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, three gyroscopes 14, 15, 16 having vertical axes of rotation are mounted in a frame 13 supported by a float 10 resting in mercury in a vessel 8 which is carried by a bracket 7 supported in a Cardan ring 4. The gyro-casings are provided with nozzles 18, 19, 20 through which air is ejected to produce rotation of the frame 13. The frame carries an adjustable horizontal mirror 17 in order that the apparatus can be used as an artificial horizon as described in Specification 108,677. In a modification, a single gyroscope is mounted in gimbals in a frame which is rotated about the axis of spin of the gyroscope by gearing from an electric motor. Damping means similar to those described in Specification 4891/14 may be employed, these means participating in the rotation described. Specifications 13280/15 and 14032/15 also are referred to.
