Abstract

160,868. Worthington, J. H., and Chevallier, A. L. Oct. 27, 1919. Gyroscopic apparatus. - An instrument for determining geographical position comprises a system of four or six gyroscopes symmetrically disposed within a pivoted sphere which is marked with a system of co-ordinates and is preferably evacuated. The arrangement shown comprises six electrically-driven gyroscopes B carried on axes radiating from a hub C within a sphere A, the planes of rotation of the gyroscope being parallel to the faces of a cube. The sphere is supported in a system of pivoted rings D, E, F, the outer ring F being supported by a frame G which can turn in a ring H slung by springs I from a frame J and is stabilized by a pair of gyroscopes N. The co-ordinates on the sphere are read by one or more microscopes K carried by the ring F. To aid in setting the sphere with its pclar axis parallel to the earth's axis a telescope 4 is supported from the ring F and is provided with means for viewing the north pole of the sphere whilst the telescope is directed to the celestial pole. When four gyroscopes are mounted in the sphere, they are arranged with their planes of rotation parallel to the faces of a regular tetrahedron.
