Divided out of 461,244, under which a Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Jan. 27, 1936. [Class 100 (ii)] In apparatus for offset-printing on non- planar surfaces, such as the convex surface of a bottle 2, Fig. 1, by means of a rubber &c. diaphragm 4, the diaphragm and holder 1 for the article form between them a closed chamber, and air pipes 6 in the holder provide means for exhausting the chamber whereby the diaphragm is drawn down on to the article so as to prevent the existence during printing, of air pockets between the surfaces in contact. The diaphragm is stretched in a frame 3, and printing pressure is applied by means of curved sponge-rubber pad 7. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the diaphragm is stretched across a hollow frame forming with the holder a closed compartment, the air between the contacting surfaces being exhausted by pipes as before with the assistance of a pipe extending through the diaphragm from above, and pressure being applied by compressed air directed on to the top of the diaphragm. In a further modification, Fig. 4, a diaphragm 19 is sucked into a cavity 20 in a block 21, the cavity being of the same shape as an article 18, the article is then placed in contact with the diaphragm, and air pressure is applied to the back of the latter through a tube 22.
