Abstract

Composite rubber articles comprising vulcanized natural rubber and vulcanized synthetic rubber made by polymerizing halogen-substituted butadiene (1 : 3) are made by arranging between the unvulcanized natural rubber and unvulcanized synthetic rubber a bonding agent comprising a halogen derivative of natural rubber, polymerized 2-chloro-butadiene (1 : 3), compounding materials, and, if desired, natural rubber, and then vulcanizing. Examples are given specifying suitable mixes, and describing the production of halogen derivatives by treating natural rubber with chlorine, bromine, hydrogen chloride, hypochlorous acid, sulphur chloride, thionyl chloride, sulphuryl chloride, phosphorus oxychloride, ethyl hypochlorite or chloroformate, and cyanogen bromide.
