Abstract

536,514. Thiazyl sulphur halides. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. May 15, 1940, No. 8706. Convention date, June 22, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] Thiazyl sulphur halides are made by reacting a suspension of a dithiazyl disulphide in an organic solvent inert to halogen with halogen until complete solution occurs. In an example, benzothiazyl sulphur chloride is made by treating a suspension of dibenzothiazyl disulphide in carbon tetrachloride with dry chlorine ; the corresponding bromide or iodide may be obtained by using bromine or iodine. Other products specified are thiazyl sulphur chloride, chlorobenzothiazyl sulphur chloride and naphthothiazyl sulphur chloride and the corresponding bromides and iodides. The products may be used as intermediates for the preparation of vulcanization accelerators. Dithiazyl disulphides are made by oxidizing the corresponding mercaptothiazoles.
