Abstract

472,007. Wheel tyres. BAUDOU, M., BAUDOU, R., and BRUNSWICK, J. Sept. 24, 1936, Nos. 25928 and 25929. Convention dates, Oct. 10, 1935 and April 9, 1936. [Class 144 (ii)] [Also in Group V] A cushion tyre, of the kind described in Specifications 368,562 and 399,356, comprises integral circumferential and transverse partitions in which the latter extend to the wheel rim and are slotted to provide a continuous circumferential passage of small cross-section open to the atmosphere through apertures in the rim. Figs. 1 and 3 show one form of tyre and mould-core, the latter consisting of a ring 6 with radial webs 4 for spacing the transverse partitions in the tyre, the webs being slotted to provide the circumferential partitions 5. Beads 14 on the core provide the base-slots 13 in the transverse partitions, and an additional web 7 is formed on the core to facilitate its withdrawal. The division produced by the web 7 may be closed after removal of the core, as by vulcanization indicated at 11. In modifications, some or all of the circumferential partitions may extend to the rim, in which case additional venting-channels are provided in the transverse partitions. The cells may be of any desired shape in cross-section, Figs. 5 and 6, showing a tyre with cells 18 of rounded section spaced by partitions 19 all of which extend to the rim, the circumferential venting-apertures being indicated at 16a. Fig. 14 shows a further modification in which the transverse partitions are formed with strengthening ribs 29 produced by the recessed portions 30 in the slotted webs 4 of the core shown in Fig. 10. The core-webs may be profiled to vary the thickness of the partitions, especially at the tread-junctions of the circumferential partitions and the base-portions of the transverse partitions. To facilitate removal of the cores, these may be of asymmetric form, as illustrated in Fig. 19, to produce a tyre of the cross-section shown in Fig. 17. Fig. 22 shows a further modification, stated to be particularly applicable for use on rail vehicles, in which some of the cavities, as shown at 43, 45, 46, are open at the sides and treadportion of the tyre.
