498,507. Pneumatic tyres; moulds. WITT, E. W. April 6, 1937, No. 9779. Void. Convention date, April 28, 1936. [Class 144 (ii)] [Also in Group V] Pneumatic tyres, particularly of the type used on aircraft landing-wheels, are built up by winding a cord or a strip of cord fabric 11 about a flat disc or annulus 10, each lay of the cord &c. being substantially tangential to a circle 12 corresponding to the inner beaddiameter of the tyre. Figs. 1 and 3 show alternative methods of winding the cord to form single or multi-ply casings, which may have bead-wires 12a, 12b embodied during the winding as shown in Fig. 5. The former 10, which is of somewhat greater diameter than the internal diameter of the finished tyre, is preferably made of corrugated cardboard &c., fusible material, or of wood or metal in collapsable form. After removal from the former 10, the casing is moulded to tyre-profile by an expansible air-bag, or other means. To prevent creeping of the tyre on the wheel, the edges may be formed with flattened portions 20, Fig. 8, to engage a corresponding seating on the wheel-rim.
