[Class 38 (iv)] Electromotive force.- Dynamo regulators employing a carbon pile resistance, the pressure on which is regulated by an electromagnet responsive to variations in the output of the dynamo, are provided with means for producing fluctuations of pressure in the pile in addition to the normal variations of pressure to prevent lag in the action of the resistance. The carbon pile resistance c, arranged in the exciting circuit of the dynamo, is subjected to the pressure of the spring d, this pressure being varied by an opposed electromagnetic force due to the armature g acting through a lever f and push rod c. The electromagnet is provided, in addition to the usual winding h, with a winding i supplied with alternating or intermittent current producing rapid variations of pressure on the pile to avoid lag when the speed of the dynamo is either increasing or decreasing. The varying current may be obtained from special slip rings on the dynamo or from interrupter mechanism.
