Regulation, automatic.-When a Tirrill regulated generator is overloaded the voltage supplied to that winding of the regulator which responds to the exciter voltage is varied by means controlled by the generator voltage or other characteristic of the generator output, in such a way that the generator voltage is rendered incapable of building up. A resistance 21 normally in series with the coil 11 fed by the exciter 5 is short-circuited by a dash-pot relay 20 when the voltage of the generator 1 is sufficiently effected by an overload or short-circuit, thus causing the regulator to maintain the exciter voltage constant at a low value dependent upon the calibration of the coil 11.
