Regulation, automatic. - Relates to Tirrill vibrating regulators for controlling the excitation of a generator in response to a characteristic of the output thereof, which characteristic may be voltage, current, power, power-factor, &c. An auxiliary vibrating regulator is brought into operation to limit the voltage of the exciter in response to an abnormal condition in another characteristic of the output of the generator. The field 4 of the generator 1 is excited by an exciter 5 having a shunt field 6 and resistance 7 in series adapted to be cut out by a regulator 8. The regulator has contacts 9, 10, respectively controlled by coils 11, 12 in the exciter and main circuits and placed in circuit with the winding 14 of a differential magnet 15 across the exciter 5, the other winding 16 being permanently across the exciter. The armature 17 of the magnet 15 opens and closes contacts 18, 19 to cut in or out the resistance 7. To prevent maximum voltage being supplied to the line 2 on continued closure of the contacts 9, 10 due to overload or a short-circuit, the circuit of the winding 14 is adapted to be broken at contacts 20, 21 the latter being under control of a magnet 22 energized by the exciter 5 through the resistance 23 part of which is cut out by a magnet 25 on abnormal conditions in the line 2. The increased current produced thereby causes the magnet 22 to separate contacts 20. 21 and limit the voltage of the exciter to a safe value, preferably lower than the normal voltage.
