471,150. Steering motor - cycles ; locking to prevent unauthorized use. CHIUSURE AUTOMATICHE DI PROTEZIONE SOC. ANON. ITALIANA C.A.P.S.A.I. Feb. 24, 1936, No. 5542. Convention date, Feb. 25, 1935. [Classes 79 (iii) and 136 (i)] In a motor-cycle, the adjusting spindle 8 for the steering damper 12 is provided with an operating knob or handle 17 normally secured to the spindle by a radially slidable pin 18 engaging a key or permutation lock casing 20 so that the damping means may be tightened up and, by retracting the pin, the adjusting knob 17 left loose on the spindle to prevent unauthorized use of the cycle. The damping plate 12 is attached to the cycle frame and in known manner, pressed against a friction washer 9 on the lower end of the steering shank 2 by a cap nut 14 on the end of the spindle 8 acting through a spring washer 13, adjustment being effected by rotation of the spindle by means of the knob or handle at its upper end. To prevent unauthorized use, when the connecting pin 18 is retracted, the opening therefor in the lock casing 20 is obturated preventing re-entry of the pin until the lock is reset. The lock 20 is provided with a setting dial 21 co-operating with a rim on the handle 17. To prevent introduction of a cutting tool, the boss 19 of the handle 17 is formed with a flange 22 overlapping a part of the nut 23 which secures the upper bearing and handle bar bracket 6 on the steering shank 2.
