Abstract
471,126. Compound sheet materials; sandals. FRANKLIN, H. W., and FRANKLIN & SONS, Ltd., J. G. Feb. 27, 1936, No. 5922. [Class 140] [Also in Group VII] A sandal is provided with a flexible sole comprising layers of cork and one or more layers of rubber, fabric or rubberized fabric. The cork layers may be separated by the layers of rubber, fabric or rubberized fabric. Preferably, each rubber or cork layer has a reinforcing layer of fine or open mesh fabric or rubberized fabric on one or both sides. The tread surface may be of rubber, in one piece or in two interfitting pieces, and preferably rubberized fabric is inserted between the rubber and cork layers. The layers may be secured together by vulcanization of a rubber adhesive, which may be self-vulcanizing. The insole of the sandal may be of cork and additional layers of cork or cork alternating with rubberized fabric may be provided at the sole and heel portions, leaving a thinner instep portion. The heel of the sandal may be formed of a single piece of compressed cork or of several cork lifts cemented together. In a typical construction, toe and instep and heel straps c, d are fastened to the sole by inserting their ends f through slits g in the upper cork layer b and cementing them between the adjacent cork and rubber layers. The proportions of cork and rubber are so adjusted that the weight of the complete sandal is not greater than and is preferably less than its buoyancy.
