Abstract

471,006. Prepayment mechanism for gas meters. HILL, J. June 27, 1936, No. 17886. [Class 27.] In a prepayment gas meter of the optional type, wherein two winding-up wheels 2, 3, Fig. 2, are arranged concentrically about a shaft 4 within a coin mechanism chamber 1, the wheels 2, 3 being connected to a valve cam 7 by an intermediate gear arranged at the back of the chamber 1 about a second parallel shaft 12 and embodying an epicyclic train and a driving worm, the driving worm 19 is in the form of an annulus carrying internally the planet pinions 18, 20 of the epicyclic train. The annulus 19 is loose on the shaft 12 and the planet pinions mesh with crown teeth 15 on a collar 14 fixed to the shaft and with crown teeth 18 on a loose sleeve 16 having a wheel 17 gearing with a wheel 9 fixed to the shaft 4 to which the penny winding-up wheel 2 is also fixed. The shilling wheel 3 is on a sleeve 10 carrying a wheel 11 which meshes with a wheel 13 fixed to the shaft 12. When the penny wheel 2 is rotated the wheel 3 remains stationary, but rotation of the wheel 3 causes the wheel 2 also to be rotated through a pawl 38, Fig. 1. The worm 19 drives a worm-wheel 22 loose on a vertical shaft 6 and having crown teeth 23 engaged by planet pinions 24 carried by a plain annulus 25 fixed to the shaft 6. The pinions 24 also mesh with crown teeth 27 carried by a worm wheel 26 driving by a worm 28 which is itself driven by the meter. A cam disc 7 for actuating the valve lever 39 is fixed to the shaft 6. A U-shaped bracket 29 is fixed at its base by screws 30 to the back of the chamber 1. A sleeve 31 carried by the upper link of the bracket provides a bearing for the shaft 6, while the lower limb receives a boss 32 of the cam 7. A detachable angle-bracket 33 provides a bearing for a boss 34 of the collar 14, the other end 35 of the shaft 12 having a bearing in the back of the chamber 1. A second angle bracket 36 provides a bearing for the shaft 37 of the meter-driven worm 28.
