Abstract
853,190. Prepayment meters. GLOVER & CO. Ltd., T. Oct. 11, 1957 [Jan. 2, 1957], No. 142/57. Class 27 A coin-operated mechanism for a gas, water, electricity or other meter comprises two differential gear assemblies on a single shaft 5 and a Geneva mechanism 12 connected by a shaft 13 to a cam 14 or levers controlling the prepayment valve lever 15. Two coin wheels are provided, the front wheel 2 being directly connected to a crown wheel 4 of the first differential and the rear wheel 3 being connected through gearing 71 to the other crown wheel 7. For shilling and half-crown operation, the gearing 71 has a 3:2 ratio so that one revolution of the wheel 2 alone rotates the shaft 5 by half a revolution while rotation of both wheels 2 and 3 together rotates the shaft by 1“ revolutions. For measuring-out, a meter-driven spindle 8 is connected through gearing 31 and worm spindle 9 to one crown wheel 10 of the second differential and the other crown wheel 11 carries a pin 11 a for driving the Geneva wheel 12. The wheel 12 has six slots at a pitch of seven slots and rotation of the wheel beyond six-sevenths of a revolution is stopped by the pin engaging the slotless portion of the wheel. The crown wheel 11 also drives an indicator 21 showing the amount of prepaid gas accumulated by the gearing, the drive including a gear 24 which is slidable on its shaft to allow the indicator to be zeroised. By altering the gearing 31 between the spindles 8 and 9 and the gearing 71 between the first two crown wheels, alternative combinations of coins can be provided for and by omitting the gearing 71 the mechanism can be adapted for single coin operation.
