Abstract

825,235. Transfer mechanism. PITNEY-BOWES Inc. Dec. 4, 1956, No. 37045/56. Class 106 (1). In registering mechanism with continuous transfer gearing between the differentially actuated numeral wheels, means are provided to effect adjustment of the transfer gearing while the gears remain in mesh to bring the numeral wheels into reading alignment. Each numeral wheel 10, Fig. 4, consists of a shell 13 closed at one end 15 and closed at the other end by a disc 17, and has a main driving gear 26 connected by a hub 25 to a sun-wheel 24 which drives a pinion 20, and a transfer driving gear 32 connected by a hub 31 to a sun-wheel 29 which drives a pinion 21. The pinions 20 and 21 mounted on shafts 22 and 23 supported in the ends of the numeral wheel which is thereby differentially driven. Transfer gearing 35 is driven by a gear 36 integral with the disc 17 and comprises gears 37, 41, 42, 44, 45 and 46. The gears 42, 44 are supported on a shaft 43 in a bracket 39 which may be rocked about a shaft 38. This rocking is accomplished by means of a rectifying pawl 54, Fig. 2, which is normally disengaged, but may be released for operation by rotation of stop discs 62 whereupon the bracket 39 is caused to rotate about the shaft 38 thereby sending the numeral wheel of next higher order back to reading alignment. The certifying pawl 54 has a tooth 56 which engages in a cavity of a cam wheel 52 fixed to the numeral wheel, the cavities being of varying depth to correspond to the ten digits on the wheel thereby providing the requisite amount of movement to the pawl numeral wheel of higher order to return the wheel to correct alignment. The stop discs 62 are so arranged that the numeral wheels are sequentially adjusted, commencing from the lowest order. U.S.A. Specification 2,657,593 is referred to.
