Abstract
882,851. Counting-apparatus; transfer mechanisms. GENERAL PRECISION Inc. Oct. 30, 1959 [Dec. 4, 1958], No. 36881/59. Class 106(1). A mechanical counter for registering in degrees of arc changes directly from an indication of 359 or 359.9 to zero. As described, a counter comprises a hundreds wheel 28, a tens wheel 22, a units wheel 20 and a tenths wheel 17. An input shaft 15 is rotated and drives the tenths wheel 17 via gears 33, 34. Transfer to the units wheel 20 is by a Geneva mechanism comprising a transfer pin 40, Fig. 3, on the tenths wheel 17 and Geneva wheel 37 freely mounted on the shaft 15, the Geneva wheel having six radial slots 39 for co-operation with the transfer pin 40 and driving the units wheel 20 via gears 41, 43. The units wheel 20 drives a transfer pinion 45 which instead of driving the tens wheel 22 directly, drives, via gearing 54, 56, 61, an intermittent locking sleeve 57 freely mounted on the shaft 15. The sleeve 57 controls both the tens and the hundreds denominations and is rotated through 10 degrees after each complete revolution of the units wheel 20. The sleeve 57 carries mutilated gears 62, 67, the gear 62 having a toothed 300 degrees portion and a recessed 60 degrees portion and driving a pinion 65 integral with the tens wheel 22, and the gear 67 having an 80 degrees toothed portion and two single teeth each situated 90 degrees away from the toothed portion, the remaining portions of the wheel being recessed. The gear 67 drives a pinion 66 integral with the hundreds wheel 28 and a 180 degrees tens rim 25 bearing the numerals 1-5 which obscures the tens wheel when the counter registers 310 to 359.9, the hundreds wheel 28 having the digit " 3 " repeated six times. The relative position of the toothed portions of the gears 62, 67 is such that the tens wheel 22 is stationary when the tens rim 25 and hundreds wheel are driven together with the tens rim visible. A modification is described in which the tenths wheel is dispensed with.
