[Class 39 (i)] In a gas and/or vapour filled discharge tube the grid 3 completely surrounds the cathode and the anode 2 is outside of the grid ; the upper end of the grid is closed by perforated plates 3a, 3b, the grid openings therein being less than 10 per cent of the entire grid surface. The diameter of the grid is less than twice the external diameter of the cathode ; at least the interior of the grid is polished for heat conservation. The lower end of the grid is closed by a solid or gauze annulus 22 which carries a mica annular plate 23 supporting the cathode. The support wires 26, 27 for the grid are broken, glass beads 33 being interposed in the breaks. The distance from the grid to the wall of the envelope 1 exceeds 5 mm. The indirectly heated cathode comprises a central insulating core 6, which carries the heater wires 7, 8 and on which is mounted the cathode body consisting of concentric cylinders 4c, 5 connected by webs, the cylinders and webs supporting emissive material; heat-insulating shields 4a, 4b, are carried by the cathode.
