Abstract
331,231. Goulding, F. A., and Game, S. F. July 23, 1929. Vacuum tubes.-Thermionic valves having one or more cathodes, grids and anodes, and wherein the gas is removed from the anodes by electronic bombardment from the grids, are so constructed that the pure or thoriated tungsten grids are carried by refractory metallic supports situated between the leads carrying the heating current to the grids, the supports being attached to an insulating body of silica &c. Preferably the anodes are heated by induced currents prior to bombardment from the grids and, after sealing, a getter, such as zirconium, calcium or thorium, so mounted as to be unaffected by the prior heatjng of the anode, is volatilized in the envelope. The volatilization of the getter may be omitted, .or some may be carried on the anode for volatilization during evacuation. Fig. 1 shows one arrangement wherein the grid 4, surrounding the filamentary cathode 5, is made of tungsten and provided with conductors 7, 8 for a heating current, being supported from a silica &c. frame 6 by hooks 9 of tungsten &c. One of the conductors is dispensed with after the completion of the valve. Where two grids are employed they are arranged as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 on either side of the cathode 14 and within anode plates 15, each grid being constituted by a spiral filament 10 supported on a glass stem 11 by tungsten &c. hooks 13 and provided with leads 12.
