Abstract

244,196. Hector, S. Sept. 23, 1924. Vacuum tubes. - In thermionic valves with two, three or more electrodes and of the kind in which electron emission is promoted by an electrically - heated element enclosed in a space separated from the evacuated space containing the other electrodes of the valve, the spaces are separated by a glass wall, preferably in the focus of a reentrant pocket 5 coaxial with the anode 2, grid 3, and bulb 1. The pocket 5 may be surrounded by a conducting covering forming the' cathode and heated by the heating element 6 or the element 6 may form the cathode. The element 6 may be in an exhausted or non-exhausted space and may be removable and replaceable. The element 6 may be enclosed directly in the pocket 5 and spirally wound on a removable rod 8 with contacts 11 engaging contacts 12 in the base 10 connected with the pins 13. In a modification, the heating element may comprise a filament enclosed in a sealed tubular quartz-glass or like container inserted into the pocket 5 and provided with contact-caps or contacts engaging contacts sealed to the pocket 5. The anode and grid may ba supported by wires 4, 4<1>.
