Abstract

466,941. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium. LICHOFF, V. Oct. 29, 1936, No. 29409. [Class 41] An oxide layer is formed on aluminium by anodic treatment in a non-aqueous bath comprising a solution of boric acid or of an organic acid, such as citric, tartaric, oxalic or lactic acid, in glycerine or glycol, the bath also containing an ammonium compound such as ammonium carbonate. The bath is maintained at 120-140‹ C., and the current density employed is such that the anode attains a temperature of about 200‹ C. Suitable proportions for the bath are 0À5-1À5 parts of the acid and 0À05-0À5 parts of ammonium carbonate to 1 part of the solvent, this producing a viscous medium.
